Keeping Everybody Happy: The Everyman Guide To Family Car Purchase

Of course you know what you’re looking for in a car! An entire herd of horses under the hood, two seats, sleek, shiny, expensive! But what about what your significant other wants in a car? Something with 4×4 capabilities, something spacious, something with a wicked entertainment system! What about what would keep your children safe? Because we know it’s not always as easy as buying what your heart desires, we here at WP Motors have compiled, for your convenience, the top 3 things to consider when family car shopping:

  1. Safety

It seems like it shouldn’t need to be said, but it does. When you’re purchasing a family car safety is a top priority, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t easily overlooked. Something like side airbags, for example, are highly controversial in the family car world. Some are for, and others against. Some say that side airbags do more harm than good in an accident, others wouldn’t dare put their children in a backseat without them – it’s best to know what you’re looking for right off the bat! If you’re undecided: look for a vehicle that has the option to activate and deactivate the side airbags at your discretion.

  1. Space

Children fight. That’s the way it works. Sometimes your best option is to separate them until they’ve cooled down, but that’s damn near impossible in the confines of a smart car, for example. Having a larger car may mean fewer fights in transit. Similarly, if you’ve still got little ones who sit in car seats or booster seats, you need to make sure that multiple car seats and/or booster seats fit into the back of the car without compromising the safety of your children. Boot space is also crucial to families who enjoy road trips, parents who regularly chauffer soccer teams etc. Pre-empt your children’s desire to play a team sport or one that requires the lugging around of equipment and ensure you’ve invested in ample boot space.

  1. Entertainment

If you’re going to be transporting kids in your car you need to have entertainment priorities. For example: is the radio going to be enough to keep your children entertained? Are you going to invest in a CD changer? Are you going to invest in a DVD player? If a particular add-on is a non-negotiable with your family you may be better off doing your research before you fall in love with a vehicle that doesn’t come with a DVD player option – or be willing to fork out to have the extras fitted by someone other than the dealer. If you’re having work done on your vehicle by someone other than the dealer you’ll also need to understand the insurance and warranty implications!
