With 2017 fast approaching and the final sales stats for passenger vehicles for the whole of 2016 soon to be tabulated; let’s take a look at where we were around the halfway mark:

  • 4% fewer cars were sold in the first half of 2016 than 2015. A 10.6% decrease in new car sales was estimated in June 2016 to equate to approximately 5000 new motor vehicles in that month.

In June, the following were South Africa’s favourite passenger vehicles:

  1. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo

Coming in at number one for the midway mark 2016, The Volkswagen Polo Vivo sold 2 354 units new in June of 2016.

  1. The Volkswagen Polo

The cousin-car to the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, the Volkswagen Polo, coming in a respectable second and ensuring VW take the top 2 spots for the midyear analysis, sold 1 987 units in June 2016.

  1. The Toyota Fortuner

Taking spots 3, 4 and 5, Toyota’s top-seller in June 2016 was the Toyota Fortuner at 1 405 units sold.

  1. The Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest

Toyota’s second best seller missed the top Toyota spot by only 105 units, selling 1 300 units in the month of June.

  1. The Toyota Etios

Still managing to break the triple-naught barrier, the Toyota Etios was a South African’s passenger vehicle of choice 1 009 times at the middle-mark of 2016.

  1. The BMW 3 Series

The first vehicle on our top 10 list not to have sold over 1000 units in the month of June, the BMW 3 Series was a favourite passenger vehicle 847 times.

  1. The Ford EcoSport

Coming in on the heels of the BMW 3 Series is the Ford EcoSport selling an impressive 805 units in June.

  1. The Ford Fiesta

The car that leaves you feeling festive, the Ford Fiesta came in at number 8 in June 2016 being chosen by 716 South African’s as their passenger car of choice.

  1. Chevrolet Spark

Always, always, always a favourite among parents buying first-time vehicles for recently-licensed drivers, the Chevrolet Spark sold 625 units in 2016’s middle month. Perhaps a separate poll would find the Chevrolet Spark South Africa’s favoured passenger vehicle for first-time car owners.

  1. Renault Clio

Hot on the Chevrolet Spark’s heels the Renault Clio still managed to exceed  500 units sold with a respectable 589 units sold in June 2016.
