If you watched Matilda the movie growing up you’re probably exceptionally wary of car salesmen; but we’re not all Harry Wormwood (even Harry Wormwood wasn’t Harry Wormwood – here’s looking at you Danny DeVito). There are a number of factors that determine whether a car salesman is or is not successful, and at the end of the day there’s only so much you can teach. A successful car salesman, or any salesman really, is tenacious, self-motivated, persistent, and dedicated – this we cannot teach. There are however a number of skills and techniques you can work on in order to become the best car salesman you can be:

What Makes A Successful Car Salesman?

  1. Patience

“Patience is a virtue” is one of those clichés we all grew up hearing from our parents but as much as we may cringe every time we hear it, it is true. Patience is an acquired skill for most (if not all) of us, and your patience or lack thereof can make or break your career as a car salesman. Most people will not visit the lot only once. Most people won’t know exactly what they’re looking for the first time they come in. Most people won’t commit to anything on the first day or at least not without a couple of hours’ worth of hemming and hawing. If you do not possess the patience to see a client through from the first to the last; they’ll find somebody more pleasant to deal with.

  1. Honesty

In a world in which car salesmen already have a bad rap for dishonesty your best course of action if you don’t know the answer to a question a buyer might have is to say so. Rather tell a potential buyer that you’re not 100% sure of the car’s fuel economy but that you will find out, than guess and guess wrong and destroy the trust and rapport you’ve established with them.

  1. Enthusiasm

In this case; fake it till you make it. Nobody wants to buy a car from a Scrooge, so even if you aren’t feeling it, put a smile on that dial and up, up, up the pep! The happier you are to serve the customer the happier the customer will be to strike a deal with you.
