How to Get the Maximum Trade-in Value for Your Used Vehicle

Why trade-in?

Trading in your new vehicle is quick and easy when compared to undertaking to sell your vehicle privately. When trading-in your vehicle it’s no muss, no fuss – save yourself the time and cost of advertising, transferring of ownership and the like and come on down to WP Motors to find out the trade-in value of your second-hand vehicle today! While the knowledge that the trade-in value of your car may not be equal to the amount you could make in a private sale may put you off trading-in your vehicle, we here at WP Motors always go the extra mile to do right by you! That’s why we’ve put together a list of the Top 3 things you should be doing to boost your car’s trade-in value:

1. Splish splash take your car for a bath

Word on the street is that you shouldn’t wash your car before taking it to the lot – the logic being that the sales-people gain an upper-hand in negotiations because they can tell you’re looking to part with the car today – we say, wash the car! Detail the car if you can afford it, because displaying your car at its best is ultimately going to count in your favour! That being said:

2. Keep it personal

Do not remove all your personal effects from the vehicle before driving it down to the lot. If you’re looking to trade-in your vehicle a representative will take it for a test-drive before you’re given a trade-in value on the car. If you leave your personal effects in the car it negates the perceived desperation or urgency on your part to part with the vehicle that washing and detailing the vehicle is said to hint at. If you arrive with a car stripped of all personal effects, clean or dirty, the sales-people are going to play hardball with you – because they can tell you arrived with no intention of leaving in the same vehicle: this gives them an upper-hand in negotiations.

3. Oh no, you’re bald!

Before driving your trade-in to the lot, consider your tires. Again, many so-called “experts” will tell you not to bother putting a new set of tires on a vehicle you’re going to trade-in because you won’t see an equal rise in trade-in value – this is not strictly true. If the tires on the vehicle are bald, the dealership will need to replace them in order to be able to resell the car – they WILL use this as an excuse for a lower trade-in value. If your tires are especially worn you may consider replacing them with a cheap new set in order to avoid being duped by sales-people who claim the condition of your tires is the primary cause a lower trade-in value.
