Eyes On The Prize: Motorsport Events To Keep An Eye On In 2017

  1. The Monte Carlo Rally

One of the ultimate Motorsport Events of all time is arguably the Monte Carlo Rally, officially called the Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo and organized annually by the Automobile Club de Monaco, the very first Monte Carlo Rally was held in 1911! In the past 105 years, the rally has gained a reputation for being the ultimate test of both driver and vehicle. The rally, which takes place along the French Riviera in the Principality of Monaco and southeast France, is notorious for its variable and various weather conditions. Wet tarmac, dry tarmac, ice on the tarmac, fog, sleet, snow, the Monte Carlo Rally brings it all! Sometimes all within a single stage of the rally! The rally also features one of the most famous special stages in the world of motorsport; the stage between La Bollène-Vésubie and Sospel, which comprises a run on a tight and winding mountain road featuring many a hairpin bend; sections of which are usually effected by ice and snow at that time of year.

  1. The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT)

Celebrating its hundred-and-ninth birthday this year, the Isle of Man TT motorcycle race asks its racers to face certain death at every turn and to laugh in its face; and these riders keep coming back for more! Though it has been one hundred and ten years since the race was first hosted, the race was cancelled in 2001 as the result of the 2001 UK Foot and Mouth epidemic and concerns over its spreading. In 2002, John McGuinness raced to claim the first of his 11 wins to date. In 2004 John McGuinness scored himself a hat trick, and in 2016 his win also secured him the title of lap and race record holder. Other famous Isle of Man TT winners include Joey Dunlop, the legendary Isle of Man TT veteran, who won his 26th and final TT in the year 2000, and retired from the sport at 48 years of age.

  1. The Indianapolis 500

Another “oldie but goodie”, the Indy 500, is arguably one of the most famous motorsport events in North America if not the world. While the Daytona 500 is considered the most prestigious event on the NASCAR calendar, the Indy 500 to this day rivals the Daytona 500 in terms of bums-on-seats. Why is the Indy 500 so popular? Not least likely because of the wrecks! A crash at the Indy 500 is always big, always front page news, and seemingly inevitable. Known colloquially as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the Indy 500 is infamous for its astronomically high average speeds and bizarre traditions – including presenting the winner with a bottle of milk, and kissing the brick at the finish line. Held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway every year over Memorial Day weekend, it still remains the open-wheeled race every driver wants to win.
